Gardening By the Yard is a very popular gardening show on Home and Garden Television (HGTV). It features a half-hour of gardening advice hosted by master gardener Paul James. 1994: A Channel Is Born.
HGTV startted as a new cable channel in 1994 and is owned by E.W. Scripps Company. The channel has a slogan that says, “Start at Home.” E.W. Scripps Company also owns HGTV’s sister channels, Fine Dining, Great American Country, DIY Network and Food Network.
All the programming on the the Home and Garden Television deals with any type of activity you might do around the house. This includes crafting, organizing, landscaping, gardening, redecorating and remodeling. Current HGTV programming consists of more than 80 active shows and numerous seasonal specials.
1996: A Show Is Born
In 1996 Gardening By the Yard became part of the HGTV lineup. Host Paul James served as the show’s writer, talent and senior producer. He is also credited with being the creator of Gardening By the Yard and films every episode almost completely from his backyard.
James started the show because he noticed that something was missing from the other gardening shows on the air. Most showed these unrealistic pristine bug-free gardens that were too perfect and often made home gardeners thing they were doing something wrong since theire yards didn’t look like that. And the hosts on these gardening shows also looked perfect with every hair in place and not a drop of sweat, no matter how hot it was.
When he created it, James made the decision that his show would be as realistic as possible. The show’s accurate representation of real life combined with James’ unique and entertaining personality have made the show very popular.
Gardening By The Yard’s host started gardening in 1978 around the time he and his wife, carrie, became first-time homeowners. James discovered he had a love for gardening, began taking courses in college and in 1983 became a certified Master Gardener. Before creating the show , James owned a company that specialized in corporate comedy.
Gardening By The Yard – The Show Today
As mentioned eariler, most of the classic episodes were filmed in James’ yard. In other episodes, the show visited a California garden that looked like a coral reef and a vines expert in Ft. Worth, Texas. Gardening By the Yard has also aired episodes dealing with eco-friendly gardening, safetyin gardening, gardening micro gardens, using spreaders and sprayers, and feeding birds.
