Use Gardening Water Conservation to Save Money and Help the Environment

Water conservation in gardening requires a bit of planning. The first part of planning your gardening with water conservation is through the selection of plants. Pick plants that thrive in conditions where there’s little water. If they can survive with less water, this means that you won’t need to water as much. You’ll have a lot less garden maintenance than if you were to pick delicate plants that require a lot of water and care.

That said, you don’t have to limit yourself to growing cacti. There are plenty of other lovely plants that do very well with little water. A few of these are moss roses, lavender, juniper and california poppies. Evergreen trees, like pines, are also another good selection is you would like to incorporate water conservation in your gardening. Indigenous plants to your area tend to adapt better to weather conditions. This means that they may need less water than non-native plants.

Selecting efficient watering systems is crucial to gardening and water conservation. This doesn’t mean you need to go from plant to plant with a giant watering can. But you shouldn’t spray everything with a hose either. Both ways are inefficient because when you water plants this way, most of the water just gets onto the leave and branches. It’s really the roots that need the water.

To maintain optimum levels of water in the soil near the roots, use a trickles or drip irrigation system to prevent the wastage of water. These systems sound complicated, but they don’t have to be. The easiest way to use an irrigation system in gardening water conservation is to use a soaker hose. Lay it out around your plants and connect it to an outdoor tap. That’s it!

If you wish to use a more complicated irrigation system, you can buy a fancier slotted hose system, but this isn’t necessary. The previous option is much easier and cheaper, and you can do it yourself with a lot less frustration.
